Ypati

Ypati Thermal Spring is located about 18 kilometers west of Lamia on the road to Karpenisi, in a verdant area of the valley of Fthiotida, crossed by the Sperchios river, at the foot of mount Oiti. At the spring there is a large hydrotherapy center, covering more than 2,600 meters, which includes 80 baths of various categories.

The thermal waters of Ypatia were most likely springing up in the year 427 BC. During an earthquake at that time, which as mentioned by Strabo caused great destruction in the whole of Central Greece and Evia. The antiquity of the spring of Hypati is also proven by other elements, among which the most important were the letters of the 4th century BC that survived until a few years ago. Which inscribed the name of the goddess Aphrodite to whom the baths of Hypati are said to have been dedicated.

The organization of the thermal springs began in 1805, while in 1903 it was the only properly organized spring in the country.

The Hydrotherapy Center of Ypati is one of the best and most modern hydrotherapy centers. It includes luxury baths with rooms for bathers to rest, a first-class bath, a second-class bath, a special treatment bathes. The apartments of the bathers' chambers are surrounded by many waiting and resting rooms for the bathers. It also has mechanical installations for ventilation of the chambers to remove gases and installations for cleaning the baths with a jet of water at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius. In total there are 59 bathers in the hydrotherapy center.

Properties of the thermal springs of Ypati

The source of Ypati has a unique physicochemical composition and belongs to a rare category of sodium hydrothio-chlorine and alkaline earth acid sources. None of today's springs resemble that of the Ypati spring. Mainly this source represents 2 categories of sources of oxycarbonates and sulphides and therefore corresponds to the 2 types of oxycarbonate baths or carbon dioxide and hydrosulphide baths. Carbon dioxide (CO2) 1.49 grams, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) 0.007 grams. Per kilogram of water temperature 33.5 degrees Celsius

One (1) kg. of Ypaty's water springs contains:Calcium 0.0660 g.; Chlorine 3.190 g.;Sodium 1.461 g.; Bromine 0.0084 g.;Ammonium 0.0043 g.; Iodine 0.00068 g.;Calcium 0.7717 g.; Sulfate ion 0.0219 g.;Magnesium 0.2162 g.; Hydrosulfide 0.0019 g.; Hydrophosphate ion 0.000017g.; Hydrocarbonate ion 1.924 gr.
